need to buy a few bitcoin, can't figure it out

I'm having real trouble understanding bitcoin, even a little bit. I just want to buy some bitcoins in order to pay for a VPN. That's it, that's all. I shouldn't use Paypal, this much is clear from everything I've read. Don't want to use my personal cc, obviously. I am in the US. Also I don't have any kind of handheld device: only a desktop computer.
I've read the stuff from the mothership and watched the videos. I get it... theoretically. Or tell myself so--until I try to actually DO something. I can't even understand the pages I'm looking at, it's like some extra-abstruse branch of the stock market but with no names, just numbers. me = despair
To get bitcoins at all, do I have to "install" some kind of ap or interface on my computer? Would rather not, it's old & already pretty slow.
I guess what I'm hoping for is a site that will hold my hand and explain in painfully clear terms ht actually get from A to Z--spend cash money in order to obtain, say, 4-6 bitcoins. I am fine w/paying a small fee to make this happen--I just don't understand HOW. Western Union? cash through the mail, what??
I wanted a method of payment that would ensure a relative level of security for my new VPN account (one the VPN provider would accept). Because what little I can figure out suggests that how I pay for my VPN is one of the weaker links to my future security in that venue. I've looked at places like strongcoin and easywallet and have rarely felt so stupid. Feeling pretty hopeless at how complicated this all is. Every day I freshen my resolve and every day I throw up my hands at a certain point, head swimming. Thx for any constructive help, much appreciated.
